This extraordinary small bar with its old barrels and dense yeasty fruity aroma is Málaga's most iconic bar by a clear mile. Founded in 1840 by a leading winemaker and vintner, Don Jose de Guardia, they even received a royal warrant from Queen Isabel II to provide wines. Mr Guardia relinquished control of the bar in 1865, but all subsequent owners have respected the original name and indeed have maintained its original character and function in the current premises which were occupied in 1900, due to the extensive work on the Atarazanas market area behind. Since then it has remained exactly the same, and it's a pleasure to step down into this long room and see the barrels lined up, watch the waiters chalk your bill onto the bar top in the old style, and sip from simple little glasses the wide variety of rich sweet and dry wines, sherries and vermouths. There are piquant and tangy little tapas available to accompany these alcoholic wonders. It's a no-nonsense place, as dictated by the time honoured tradition of standing at a long bar and talking to friends, which despite the tourist droves who visit, is still very much a favourite of the locals. It is the not to be missed quintessential Málaga bar. Open from ten in the morning until ten at night.
